Windows 2000 - Microsoft / Windows Update / Error number: 0x8000202 Solution

Lucky you!  November 15th on my laptop boot up, I got a svchost.exe dialog box that alerted me of a shutdown.  I ignored it.  But it kept happening on each reboot.  I ran a virus scan in Kaspersky Anti Virus 6.0, no threats found.  Did some Google research and most resources said try installing fixes from Windows Update.

There I found that my computer didn't recognize that I had upgraded to MICROSOFT update, when I clicked on the upgrade link, it flashed, then nothing.  Back to the Update home page.  When I clicked on EXPRESS update link... whoah, then I was getting error messages.

Well, I restored a backup from about a month ago.    All I got out of that was files I've deleted since then on my Windows 2000 professional system.  Sure enough, Windows Update kept giving me errors that "page cannot be viewed".  So I copied and pasted the error on the upper right hand corner:

Error number: 0x8000202

I found THE SOLUTION that worked.  So if your computer is running Windows 2000 Professional and your Windows/Microsoft Updates aren't working.  This worked for me.

Step 1: Check the local Windows Update services.
===============
This issue can occur if three services have not been configured correctly. Please refer to the following steps to check them:  (for the record, mine were set up correctly already)

1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.
2. Double click the service " Background Intelligent Transfer Service ".
3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.
4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.
5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic". Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the service.

Step 2: Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update.  (this worked it out for me)
===============
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

Net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.

4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

Net start WuAuServ
